Peru Watchdog Audits 466 Police Stations, Flags Serious Deficiencies

Early inspections in Lima document degraded facilities with outdated gear to inform corrective action.

Overview

  • Nearly 700 auditors were deployed across 25 police regions to assess infrastructure, staffing, equipment, complaint handling and other services at 466 stations.
  • At the Ciudad y Campo station in Rímac, inspectors found weapons over 40 years old, deteriorated bulletproof vests, too few radios and structural damage from humidity.
  • At Pamplona I in San Juan de Miraflores, findings included corroded stairways, damaged roofs, vests with more than 35 years of use, oxidized rounds, exposed wiring and unused new motorcycles due to lack of training.
  • Previous visits to stations in San Juan de Lurigancho identified 14 adverse issues, including unsafe infrastructure, missing sector patrol plans, scarce equipment and late referral of domestic violence complaints to judicial authorities.
  • The operation runs through November 5, with resulting reports to be sent to the Interior Ministry and the National Police, as the minister acknowledges only 9,173 operational vests for a force of about 130,000.
