Peru University Professors Launch Indefinite National Strike, Shuttering Campuses

FENDUP says the walkout will continue until the government signs firm agreements on salary homologation.

Overview

  • The Federación Nacional de Docentes Universitarios del Perú began a nationwide, open-ended strike on November 3 with local university unions joining the action.
  • At the National University of Piura, classes were suspended for roughly 15,000 students and the university reported no date to resume the semester.
  • UNP administrative workers reported nonpayment of the October CAFAE benefit, saying payslips were issued but deposits of about S/1,350 to S/1,560 never arrived, alongside unpaid bonuses such as a S/700 quarterly payment, a S/550 cost-of-living payment, and travel allowances.
  • The UNP administrative union launched a staggered stoppage and said contractors working under locación de servicios have gone two months without pay.
  • In Ica, teachers at the National University San Luis Gonzaga closed campus entrances with banners and pickets, as unions pressed demands including salary homologation under Law 30220, higher public university budgets, inclusion of practice chiefs, and changes to promotion rules.
