Peru to Declare Border Emergency, Enlisting Army in Frontier Security

Officials cast the shift as an effort to tighten controls at the PeruChile crossings against irregular migration.

Overview

  • From the Tacna border, President José Jerí said the government will place border zones under a state of emergency to authorize Army support for National Police patrols.
  • He stated that no undocumented person will be allowed to enter the country and that irregular entrants will be expelled.
  • He indicated the measure will be evaluated across all border districts and could begin as early as next week.
  • Jerí inspected the Santa Rosa complex and reviewed migration, customs, health and forestry procedures carried out by SUNAT, Migraciones, Aduanas, SENASA, SERFOR and the police.
  • He announced more police vehicles and a multisector intervention for border areas, and referenced a bill that would make Army responsibility for border security permanent.
