Peru Suspends Choquequirao Visits From Feb. 1 as Cusco Puts Archaeological Sites on Maximum Alert

Officials ordered the pause due to rain-weakened access routes.

Overview

  • The Culture Ministry will halt entry to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park for an initial 30 days starting February 1, covering all approaches to the site.
  • Authorities set a 15-day advance communication period and scheduled a joint on-site inspection for January 23–27 with regional, local and tourism officials as well as arriero representatives.
  • A multisector Hoja de Ruta will define tasks, responsible agencies and timelines for evaluations, maintenance and risk mitigation before any reopening.
  • The Cusco culture office has declared maximum alert through March with reinforced technical monitoring across key parks including Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Moray, Pikillaqta, Tipón and Raqchi.
  • A regional risk official also stated that the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu will be closed in February for annual conservation work and visitor safety.
