Peru Sets Oct. 4, 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections as Tribunals Step Up Candidate Scrutiny

Early rulings plus appeals signal an intensive vetting phase that will determine who stays on the ballot.

Overview

  • The Executive formalized the ERM 2026 for Sunday, October 4 via Supreme Decree No. 001-2026-PCM to choose regional governors and councilors as well as provincial and district mayors and council members nationwide, including Callao.
  • The JNE activated the ERM calendar with primaries on May 17 and 24 and a June 16 deadline to register formulas and lists, under rules that require gender parity, youth quotas and indigenous representation.
  • The JNE scheduled its first public hearing for January 8 to review 16 candidate-registration appeals elevated by JEEs from several regions, with rulings to follow in reserved session and proceedings streamed for transparency.
  • The JEE declared the APRA list for Lima deputies inadmissible over altered ordering, form errors and two candidates with sentences, granting two days to correct, and it deemed inadmissible an appeal against the rejection of a tacha to Renovación Popular’s presidential formula due to an underpaid fee with a one-day window to cure.
  • Perú Primero faces added scrutiny as the JEE in Arequipa 1 flagged its deputies list for improper leave-of-absence dates and documentation, while Mario Vizcarra appealed tachas that excluded his presidential bid after he reported a prior peculado conviction.
