Peru Sets Jan. 17 Alliance Deadline as JNE Flags Gaps in Juntos por el Perú Filings

New polling shows weak public engagement with the electoral process.

Overview

  • The legal cutoff to register electoral alliances with the ROP is January 17, according to the official election calendar.
  • Key milestones follow: parties must inform ONPE of their primary modality by February 16, hold primaries on May 17 and 24, register final candidate lists by June 16, and vote on October 4 for 25 governorships, 196 provincial mayoralties, and 1,696 district mayoralties.
  • Juntos por el Perú has registered 27 of the 56 required lists and shows no candidates in nine regions based on JNE platform records.
  • The JEE of Pasco rejected a JPP claim of platform failures for lack of proof, and a January 9 JNE technical report notes JPP lists in Huánuco remained in draft after the deadline, with multiple JPP candidacies ruled inadmissible including Lima’s entire multiple-seat Senate list and 21 of 32 deputy nominees as appeals reach the JNE pleno.
  • A Datum survey reports that only 12% of respondents have chosen a presidential candidate, 70% have not begun considering their vote, and 60% feel poorly informed.
