Overview
- Under Resolution No. 0110-2025-JNE, Monday, October 13, is the cutoff for ministers, viceministers, regional governors and vicegovernors, mayors, and regidores who plan to run in the April 12, 2026 elections to formally resign.
- Regional governors must file resignations with their regional council, which has until October 20 to forward the documentation to the JNE via its virtual filing system, with the vicegovernor taking over immediately and replacements designated if both posts are vacated.
- Mayoral resignations go to the municipal council and must be remitted to the JNE within the same window, after which the first regidor or corresponding official assumes the mayoralty once credentialed by the electoral jury.
- Members of the Armed Forces and the National Police who seek to be candidates must move to retirement status at least six months before the vote.
- Public-sector workers not required to resign must request unpaid leave starting February 11, 2026, and failure to meet the prescribed timelines or procedures will result in ineligibility to run.
