Peru Sets December 17 Start for RFID Motorcycle Plates

RFID readers at checkpoints will verify plate and engine data without monitoring speed or full journeys.

Overview

  • New plates will be mandatory on motorcycles sold from December 17, 2025, according to the Transport Ministry.
  • Existing motorcycles must replace plates on a national schedule from February 2026 through November 2031 organized by the last digit of the current plate.
  • Sanctions begin in October 2026 for missing the assigned window, treated as infraction M24 with fines and possible vehicle retention.
  • The system uses a unique RFID tag affixed to the front headlight via a holographic film that stores the plate number and engine serial to prevent cloning.
  • PNP and Sutran will read tags at monitoring points to confirm authorization, outstanding penalties or police alerts in seconds, while only logging passage at specific locations.
