Overview
- Indeci led a national Simulacro por Sismo seguido de Tsunami that began at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, and minutes later sent SISMATE mobile alerts and activated public sirens across coastal regions.
- The drill used a technical scenario published by the Navy’s DHN and the IGP that simulated an Mw 8.8 earthquake at 42 km depth with an epicenter 60 km west of Callao to drive warning and evacuation actions.
- The SISMATE message warned of an imminent train of waves and ordered people to move away from beaches, ports and boardwalks and to evacuate to high or vertical safe zones following local authorities’ instructions.
- Local governments and agencies executed evacuation protocols, tested routes and revised safe assembly points in places such as Pisco and Quilca, with some municipalities identifying new elevated gathering sites.
- Authorities stressed the exercise was a test, urged households to follow Indeci’s three-step action plan and to prepare an emergency mochila with water, food, hygiene items, a radio and first-aid supplies as officials evaluate results.
