Peru Puts 21 Regions on Red Alert for Heavy Rains as Jungle Faces Orange Warning

Forecasts call for 50–60 mm of daily rain in the jungle with lightning plus 45 km/h gusts, prompting readiness actions by emergency agencies.

Overview

  • COEN and INDECI activated a Red Alert through Jan. 16 for 21 regions due to intense rain with potential river activation, overflows, huaicos and flooding.
  • SENAMHI issued Orange Warning Aviso No. 015 for the jungle from Jan. 17–18, projecting around 50 mm/day in the north and center and up to 60 mm/day in the south with lightning and wind gusts near 45 km/h.
  • Departments flagged under the jungle alert include Amazonas, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, San Martín, Ucayali, Ayacucho and Puno.
  • INDECI urged local and regional authorities to keep evacuation routes clear and signposted, and to ensure health centers, police and firefighters can respond quickly.
  • Households were advised to reinforce roofs, set up simple early-warning signals such as whistles or sirens, and activate family emergency plans in coordination with local officials.
