Peru Projects 4.2% Agricultural Growth in 2025 on Improved Weather and Planting Plans

The ministry credits fuller reservoirs with supporting an expansion of sowing.

Overview

  • Midagri’s official outlook puts 2025 agropecuary growth at 4.2%, citing better agroclimatic conditions and stronger food consumption from a recovering economy.
  • Sector output strengthened through September: the VBP rose 5.9% year to date, including a 12.1% jump in September driven by an 18.4% surge in agriculture and 3.4% in livestock.
  • Midagri’s Crop Orientation Framework projects a 5.4% increase in 2025/2026 sowing areas, with gains in rice (4.0%), potato (4.4%), hard yellow maize (13.4%), cassava (6.8%) and sweet corn (14.1%).
  • Water availability is set to support planting, with reservoir storage averaging above 90% capacity and seasonal rains expected from November to January.
  • Persistent constraints—limited credit, technology gaps and irrigation infrastructure needs—remain in focus, as the government highlights new financing such as S/ 250,012 for a Piura banana cooperative and S/ 56.7 million in Agrobanco loans to more than 3,800 small farmers.
