Peru Probes Extortion After Arson in Cusco and Bodega Blast in Chaclacayo

Police are probing possible extortion motives after twin attacks on small shops left multiple people injured.

Overview

  • Around 3:30 a.m. in Cusco, security cameras captured a man dousing a motorcycle shop with gasoline, igniting it, and catching fire before fleeing on his motorcycle.
  • A woman and a child of about three inside the Cusco shop suffered burns and were aided by firefighters from Company 29.
  • In Chaclacayo’s Morón area, an explosive device left inside a bodega detonated as the owner tried to remove it, leaving him hospitalized in reserved condition after hand surgery.
  • Depincri Chosica cordoned the Chaclacayo scene and will request nearby security camera footage to determine who left the device.
  • Police have not ruled out extortion in either case, with neighbors reporting prior threats against the Chaclacayo owner, though authorities have not confirmed any link between the incidents.
