Peru Police Seize Massive Explosives Haul and Dismantle Cargo-Theft Ring in Lima Raids

Police cite preliminary evidence that the explosive cache came from Bolivia.

Overview

  • Officers stopped a truck at the Pucusana mobile checkpoint on the Panamericana Sur and found 12,400 cartridges of emulsified explosive, 4,800 sticks of dynamite and 120 rolls of fuse hidden among hay, detaining two brothers who tried to flee.
  • The cache was valued at more than 2.5 million soles, and investigators are exploring preliminary hypotheses that its intended use could involve illegal mining, violent protests or extortion in Lima.
  • In a separate, simultaneous operation under emergency powers, police carried out seven searches in Callao, Comas, Carabayllo and Puente Piedra, detaining five suspects and breaking up the group known as La Hermandad del Norte.
  • Authorities say the ring studied targets, kidnapped a driver for hours and used GPS jammers to divert a truck carrying medical equipment worth €142,000, moving the load through Sarita Colonia to Puente Piedra for resale.
  • Police also reported arrests of alleged extortionists operating in Lima Norte, seized communications gear and documents, and transferred detainees and recovered goods to Dirincri and the Public Ministry for ongoing investigations.
