Peru Police Arrest Suspect in Viral Dog Abuse Case, Seize Drugs in Callao Raid

Prosecutors opened cases under Peru’s animal-protection law alongside public-health statutes.

Overview

  • Police identified the detainee as Yixon José Campos Herrera, 33, a Venezuelan national whom they describe as alias “Sombra” and the alleged leader of Los Cangris del Callao.
  • A second Venezuelan, Manuel Abraham Mendoza Hernández, 27, was also detained during the Rastrillaje 2025 operation conducted by officers from the Juan Ingunza station.
  • Officers reported seizing about 250 grams of marijuana and a replica firearm from the primary suspect’s residence.
  • The dog, Atenea, an American Bully, was rescued and is receiving specialized care at a Surco clinic, with Animal Surco 24 Horas assuming treatment and a later adoption process.
  • Authorities say the investigation is ongoing for alleged offenses against public health and violations of Law 30407, and the detainee claimed he acted because the dog had attacked a cat.
