Peru Parties Hit Deadline to Register Precandidates for 2026 Primaries

The process now shifts to delegate selection under strict rules that can disqualify lists that fail to reach 10% support.

Overview

  • Internal registration of all precandidate slates closed on October 31 for the 39 political organizations, a stage managed exclusively by party electoral bodies without JNE intervention.
  • ONPE is scheduled to receive the complete, validated lists of precandidates on November 7 as the next formal step in the calendar.
  • Primary voting will be held in two rounds: affiliates vote directly on November 30, and delegates cast votes on December 7, depending on the modality chosen by each organization.
  • Affiliates must choose the delegates who will participate in the December 7 primaries, and presidential and congressional lists that do not secure at least 10% of valid votes face exclusion.
  • A limited digital voting pilot remains under evaluation, with a mid-December decision expected under JNE oversight, as ONPE’s Arequipa offices continue providing free technical assistance and training to parties.
