Peru Overhauls Driver Points System With Bigger Reductions for In‑Person Safety Course

The change prioritizes reeducation by tying the largest benefit to presencial training.

Overview

  • Published on January 11 in El Peruano, Decreto Supremo No. 001-2026-MTC updates the license points-control regime, takes effect five calendar days after publication, and requires MTC IT and course-directive updates within that period.
  • Drivers who pass the Safety Course may cut up to 40 points via the virtual modality or up to 50 points by completing it in person.
  • Eligibility generally applies only to drivers with fewer than 100 firm points and no active non-pecuniary sanctions such as suspension or cancellation.
  • For 45 working days from entry into force, drivers with 100–149 firm points may access the course and the corresponding reduction if they have no suspension or cancellation.
  • Point reductions erase existing points without generating a credit balance, and the benefit is void if a sanction is imposed before the discount is registered.
