Peru Orders 150-Bed Maximum-Security Wing at Ancón I to Be Ready in 15 Days

The Jerí administration says the facility will isolate high-risk inmates to disrupt criminal leadership inside prisons.

Overview

  • INPE announced the project by order of President José Jerí, with agency chief Iván Paredes Yataco directing the implementation.
  • The new unit will be in Stage A of the Special Closed Regime at Ancón I and is designed for 150 inmates considered highly dangerous.
  • Officials set a 15-day timeline to finish the works, presenting the step as a reinforcement of control and prison population management.
  • The pavilion is intended for prisoners processed or sentenced for crimes including contract killing, extortion, qualified homicide and aggravated robbery.
  • The decision follows recent prison operations and inspections, including Operation Ciclón that uncovered phones, drugs and electronic devices in multiple facilities.
