Peru Opens 2026 Southern Anchoveta Season With 251,000-Ton Quota

Regulators link the start to science-based oversight that enables swift closures if juvenile catch or environmental signals warrant action.

Overview

  • Fishing begins January 1 and will end when the limit is met or by June 30, covering waters from 16°00' south to Peru’s southern maritime boundary.
  • Only authorized vessels with valid permits and an assigned LMCE-Sur may operate, using purse-seine nets with 13 mm mesh and SISESAT satellite tracking.
  • Juvenile safeguards cap undersized catch at 10% by count, trigger at least three days of suspensions in affected zones, and set a 5% limit on incidental catch of other species.
  • IMARPE reported strong 2025 landings in the south with biomass above reference levels but higher juvenile incidence, and it will monitor conditions to recommend area closures or season adjustments.
  • Produce will publish vessels barred from sailing under SISESAT rules, apply sanctions under the General Fisheries Law, and issue per‑vessel catch limits for the southern fleet separately.
