Peru Navy Warns of Anomalous Coastal Swells Through Dec. 11

Officials urge port curbs, limited fishing, and beach caution due to higher tides on exposed shores.

Overview

  • The Navy’s hydrography directorate (DHN) issued Special Notice No. 55 forecasting light to moderate anomalous swell along the entire Peruvian coast.
  • Northern coast (TumbesSalaverry): light from Saturday, Dec. 6 afternoon, rising to moderate early Sunday, Dec. 7, then easing back to light by Monday night, Dec. 8.
  • Central coast (SalaverrySan Juan de Marcona): light from pre‑dawn Monday, Dec. 8, becoming moderate Tuesday, Dec. 9, and decreasing Wednesday, Dec. 10, with the Pisco–San Juan de Marcona stretch active Wednesday afternoon.
  • Southern sector (south of Pisco to Tacna): light swell expected from Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 10.
  • Indeci advises suspending port and fishing activities, securing small vessels, and avoiding beach sports, noting a waxing moon could raise tide levels as DHN maintains continuous monitoring and updates.
