Peru Navy Alerts to Anomalous Surf Through Sept. 30, With Central Coast Facing Peak Risk Sept. 27–28

The navy attributes the elevated surf to the new-moon phase influencing tides.

Overview

  • An official alert from the Dirección de Hidrografía y Navegación is in effect along the Peruvian coast from Sept. 26 to Sept. 30 for anomalous wave conditions.
  • Between Callao and San Juan de Marcona, waves are forecast to turn moderate on Saturday with intermittent strong peaks from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon before easing Monday morning.
  • In the north (TumbesSalaverry), light waves are expected from Saturday night, strengthening to moderate Sunday afternoon and easing Monday night, while the south (San Juan de MarconaTacna) begins Saturday morning, reaches moderate Saturday night, and weakens from Monday morning.
  • The phenomenon is expected to be most noticeable on open or semi-open southwest-facing beaches due to higher tides during the new-moon phase.
  • Authorities and maritime businesses have been urged to take preventive measures, and reporters observed frequent medium-size waves at La Pampilla in Miraflores that could pose risks to beach users.
