Overview
- Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde said the legislative package to authorize military deployment at strategic border posts will be approved by the Council of Ministers and formally requested from Congress in the coming days, comments made at an Aug. 3 reception at Grupo Aéreo N.° 8.
- The government has already begun coordinated actions on the ground, including a Peruvian Air Force flight that sent three alleged Tren de Aragua members to Venezuela and the return of ten repatriated Peruvians.
- Officials announced a policy of immediate expulsion for foreign nationals convicted in Peru once they complete their sentences, to be carried out under the new interagency plan.
- The Armed Forces will work with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to carry out expulsions and to reinforce surveillance at border crossings using troops and technology.
- The proposal is still in preparation and requires congressional authorization, a step that could raise legal and human rights questions and will change security and daily life at frontier communities if implemented.
