Overview
- The minister of education told Congress this Tuesday that the government will soon issue rules allowing directors and teachers to intervene in severe school violence, including separating or relocating aggressive students to keep victims safe.
- Minedu has published a draft reglamento for Law No. 32385 that would not ban phones but would let each school set specific rules for cellphone and device use during class and elsewhere on campus.
- Officials say any removal of a student for violent behavior will be stepped by severity and must preserve the student’s right to education through alternatives such as basic alternative centers or remote learning.
- The ministry will convene the Colegio de Psicólogos del Perú, specialists and community representatives to design prevention, care and response protocols, but final rules, timelines and enforcement mechanisms remain pending.
- The draft measures come with a proposed 2027 education budget of S/49,068 million of which S/18,179 million is for the education sector and could fund school safety, teacher training and connectivity needed to deliver alternative education.
