Peru Mobilizes Emergency Response for a Potentially Strong El Niño

Scientists warn a likely strong El Niño in early 2027 that could overwhelm river defenses and disrupt power and transport across the Andes and La Plata basins.

Overview

  • Keiko Fujimori traveled to Piura on Friday to inspect river-cleaning works, warned the event could be “really dramatic,” and urged people living near rivers to prepare evacuation routes and emergency kits.
  • The government says it has identified 1,800 risk points, prioritized 536 for action and reported about 70% progress on those sites while claiming cleaned sections of the Piura River now handle 4,000 m3/s and setting accelerated completion targets.
  • Peru has deployed emergency resources including temporary shelters for roughly 30,000 people, field hospitals, five naval ships, about 22 helicopters, modular bridges and thousands of tons of food and water stocks.
  • Heavy rains tied to El Niño have already forced mass evacuations and transport limits regionally, with around 1,000 families moved in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, and more than 200 people reallocated in Argentina’s Corrientes province.
  • Ecuador reported power outages linked to low hydro reservoir levels and scientists—ENFEN and NOAA—estimate a high probability that the event will be strong in Jan–Mar 2027, which raises the risk that current works and plans may not be sufficient against an extreme episode.
