Peru Issues National Red Alert as Intense Rains Threaten 15 Regions

Preparedness guidance is in effect as unusual summer downpours raise the risk of huaicos, landslides, floods.

Overview

  • Senamhi announced a red alert covering 15 regions due to forecast heavy rainfall and elevated risks of huaicos, quebrada activation, landslides and flooding in the coming days.
  • Arequipa moved from yellow to orange alert after intensifying rains, with Caravelí reporting huaicos that flooded homes and disrupted traffic on the Panamericana Sur.
  • Senamhi’s National Advisory No. 11 forecasts light to moderate coastal rains of 1–8 mm per day across five provinces in La Libertad: Trujillo, Ascope, Chepén, Pacasmayo and Virú.
  • National emergency bodies COEN and Indeci issued guidance to local governments and the public with preparedness recommendations.
  • In Trujillo, regional officials warned that unfinished protection works on the San Ildefonso quebrada and limited progress on the Moche River increase near-term flood and debris-flow risk.
