Peru Issues Dual Yellow Alerts for Southern Highlands Cold Snap and Rains in 12 Regions Through Oct. 12

Altitude dictates risks, bringing extreme chill at higher elevations alongside showers with electrical discharges in several regions.

  • Senamhi's nocturnal cold alert runs from 00:00 on Oct. 11 through the night of Oct. 12 for Arequipa, Puno, Cusco and Moquegua.
  • Minimums could reach −14°C above 4,000 meters with around 5°C at sites above 3,000 meters, alongside wind gusts up to 40 km/h.
  • A separate precipitation alert remains active until Sunday, Oct. 12 at 23:59 for Áncash, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Pasco, Piura and Tumbes.
  • Forecasts note possible electrical discharges, gusts near 35 km/h, hail above 2,800 meters and snow above 4,000 meters in affected highland zones.
  • Coastal showers in the north are linked to rainfall transfer from the northern sierra, with expected accumulations of 3–6 mm/day in Tumbes and Piura, under 2 mm/day in Lambayeque and La Libertad, and 10–15 mm/day in the northern highlands.
