Overview
- Senamhi and INDECI/COEN issued a formal alert for a fourth friaje forecast for June 23–25 that covers nine departments in the Peruvian Amazon: Ayacucho, Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, San Martín and Ucayali.
- Technical forecasts call for moderate to heavy rain with daily totals near 50 mm in the northern selva and up to 60 mm in central and southern areas, frequent electrical storms, gusts around 50 km/h and minimum temperatures dropping toward 14 °C in the southern Amazon.
- A third friaje already entered Peru late on Friday and produced a sharp nocturnal temperature fall and intense overnight rains with electrical discharges in Madre de Dios, showing the system’s capacity to bring sudden hazards to the selva.
- INDECI/COEN and local civil defense have raised risk maps to yellow and orange levels and advised residents to secure roofs, avoid outdoor activities during storms and activate local response protocols to protect light structures and river traffic.
- A friaje is a polar cold-air mass that moves from the southern selva northward, and these events can quickly increase flood, landslide and navigation risks for vulnerable rural and riverside communities, so authorities say they will issue further updates as conditions evolve.
