Peru’s Growth Loses Momentum as El Niño Costero Hits Fishing, Farming and Manufacturing

Authorities warn the coastal El Niño pattern could strengthen between October 2026 and January 2027 and deepen losses in climate‑sensitive sectors.

Overview

  • The national production index rose 3.05% in the first half of 2026 while monthly growth slowed to 1.75% in June 2026, the weakest monthly rate recorded this year.
  • Fishing plunged 51.94% in June after anchoveta landings fell from about 462,000 tonnes in June 2025 to roughly 629 tonnes this June and the Ministry of Production temporarily suspended capture to protect stocks.
  • Manufacturing fell 6.19% in June with large drops in fish processing and primary factory output that were directly linked to the anchoveta collapse.
  • Construction and commerce drove the June gain with construction up 9.04% on higher cement use for private projects and commerce up 7.81 largely because of a sharp rise in vehicle sales.
  • INEI and ENFEN keep an El Niño Costero alert in place with a high chance of intensification from October 2026 to January 2027, posing risks to harvests, fishmeal supply, regional incomes and food prices in the coming months.
