- The Ministry of Education’s human-resources office confirmed on May 28 that May 29, 2026, the Day of the Public Servant, will be a nonworking day only for public-sector education employees who opt in.
- The benefit applies solely to workers in the education sector and comes from clause four of a collective agreement between Minedu and the unions CONTASE, CONFESADEP, FENUTRASEP and FENASIERPROSE.
- This is not a national holiday but a ‘día no laborable compensable,’ so employees who do not work on May 29 must recover the hours later and receive no extra holiday pay.
- For individuals who take the day off the schedule can form a three-day weekend from Friday through Sunday and public services may see reduced staffing that day.
- The Day of the Public Servant was established by Decreto Ley 11377 in 1950 and the May 29 concession follows routine collective-bargaining practice rather than a change in national holiday law, with a separate nonworking day already planned for July 27.
