Peru Faces Multiple New Wildfires as Cusco Records Fatality and Critical Burns

New outbreaks stretch local firefighting capacity as officials rush damage assessments.

Overview

  • Seven new wildfires ignited on Tuesday, Oct. 13, across districts in Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Cusco, Pasco and San Martín, the national emergency agency INDECI and COEN reported.
  • An ongoing blaze in Río Tambo (Junín) remains active after first being detected on Oct. 4 and has destroyed roughly 350 hectares of vegetation, damaged about 20 homes and burned some 80 hectares of crops, according to local assessments.
  • A resident died in Puente Ccoyo, Santo Tomás (Chumbivilcas, Cusco), bringing the region's wildfire death toll to six for the year, and a 65-year-old man from Acopia is in critical condition with third-degree burns on about 90% of his body.
  • Preliminary local damage-and-needs assessments (EDANs) report recent losses such as 154 hectares of natural cover and damage to a school, while COER Cusco says the region has logged 336 fires this year affecting about 11,150 hectares.
  • Response efforts are led by INDECI, COEN and regional COER offices supported by municipal brigades, police, agricultural agencies and community brigadistas but officials warn that repeated ignitions and reactivations are straining capacity and raising the risk of further damage to homes, crops and infrastructure.
