Peru Extends Sanitary Emergency for Measles for 90 Days

It grants health authorities legal power to continue a nationwide free SPR vaccination campaign to curb spread toward Lima, Callao and 11 regions.

Overview

  • The government issued a supreme decree on Saturday, August 15, 2026 extending the national sanitary emergency for 90 days to address a continuing measles outbreak.
  • Official surveillance through epidemiological week 30-2026 shows cases in 40 provinces and 118 districts, with Puno accounting for about 32.5% of active transmission and multiple districts showing sustained spread.
  • The decree directs execution of a preexisting Plan of Action, authorizes continued procurement and contracting of goods and services for the response, and requires post-extension reporting on activities, spending and results.
  • The Ministry of Health is maintaining a free SPR (measles-mumps-rubella) immunization campaign at more than 8,000 health centers and mobile points as the main containment tool and is urging caregivers to confirm children have two doses.
  • Officials warn the extension seeks to prevent wider urban spread into Lima Metropolitana and Callao and to stabilize persistent foci in Puno and nearby regions, with progress to be measured by the required reports at the end of the 90 days.
