Peru Expands National Measles Response as Cases Top 1,900

The health ministry has extended the sanitary emergency to deploy more than 1.1 million SPR doses to close immunity gaps.

Overview

  • Peru is confronting a multi‑regional measles outbreak with more than 1,929 confirmed cases concentrated in Puno and Arequipa and active spread reported in 16 regions and Lima Metropolitana.
  • Routine immunization coverage is well below targets with the second dose of the measles‑mumps‑rubella vaccine (SPR) at about 45.1% as of Sept. 9, leaving large pockets of susceptible people.
  • The Ministry of Health extended the sanitary emergency by 90 days and activated a national contingency that includes mobile brigades, school and market vaccination points, and a targeted 'Dosis Cero' for infants 6–12 months.
  • The Second National Vaccination Week, which began Tuesday, Sept. 22, runs through Sept. 27 and aims to close gaps by expanding hours and sending teams to reach children, pregnant women and older adults.
  • Local authorities are intensifying case finding and isolation after regional alerts: Arequipa reported 498 confirmed cases with Camaná the main hotspot, Ayacucho confirmed its first recent case, and Loreto recorded the country’s first reported measles death this outbreak.
