Peru Education Panel Backs Teacher Pay Overhaul to S/315 an Hour by 2028

A pending plenary vote will test MEF funding commitments plus Minedu readiness.

Overview

  • The Congressional Commission on Education approved a dictamen to update the Remuneración Íntegra Mensual used to calculate public teachers’ pay, sending the measure to the full Congress.
  • Sponsored by Congressman Segundo Montalvo of Perú Libre, the plan sets the base hourly RIM at S/120 in 2026, S/140 in 2027 and S/150 in 2028.
  • At the top magisterial scale, projected pay reaches S/10,080 per month for 40 hours in 2026 and S/12,600 in 2028, equivalent to S/252 and S/315 per hour.
  • If enacted, the changes would affect more than 400,000 teachers across the eight scales defined by the Ley de Reforma Magisterial.
  • Implementation would require significant budget allocations and coordination between MEF and Minedu, with entry into force targeted for January 1, 2026 if approved.
