Peru Destroys and Seizes Millions in Amazon Illegal Gold‑Mining Gear

The intelligence‑led raids aim to dismantle organized mining networks that drive mercury pollution and riverbed destruction.

Overview

  • Multi‑agency operations carried out on Saturday, May 23 disabled 16 dredges on the Aguaytía River in Ucayali and executed two separate raids in Madre de Dios that interdicted equipment and supplies.
  • Authorities estimated the destroyed machinery in Ucayali at more than S/3 million and said seizures in Madre de Dios exceeded S/2 million, with four people detained in one operation.
  • Seized items in Madre de Dios included three balsas traca, diesel engines, hydraulic pumps, chainsaws, electric drills, metal tubing, about 670 gallons of fuel, small amounts of mercury and ammunition.
  • The raids were conducted under Decreto Legislativo N.º 1100 and involved the National Police, navy, army units, prosecutors, SUNAT, regional control bodies and NGOs such as Conservación Amazónica.
  • Officials said the strikes follow prior intelligence work to target centralized illegal mining hubs and form part of a continued campaign to degrade criminal logistics, reduce toxic contamination and protect riverine communities.
