Peru Destroys 8,291 Recovered Firearms and 8.7 Tonnes of Illegal Pyrotechnics

International oversight ensured transparent disposal using mechanized cutting for weapons, with controlled incineration for pyrotechnics.

Overview

  • Sucamec completed a nationwide operation on Nov. 8–9 to permanently remove 8,291 firearms from circulation after legal retention periods elapsed under MAG Internacional supervision.
  • The work formed part of a U.S. State Department–funded program for physical security and stockpile management to ensure traceability and compliance with international standards.
  • A separate disposal incinerated 8.7 tonnes of illegal pyrotechnics at the Army’s munitions center in Pisco, conducted by specialized teams with logistical support from the Peruvian Army.
  • Lima accounted for 5,773 of the destroyed guns, followed by La Libertad (554), Piura (277) and Áncash (261), reflecting regional enforcement results reported by Sucamec.
  • Sucamec said pyrotechnic destructions in 2025 now exceed 21 tonnes, and the agency will continue coordinated inspections to prevent reentry into illicit markets.
