Peru Confirms Two H3N2 Cases, Issues Preventive National Health Alert

Officials say the measure strengthens surveillance and vaccinations without imposing restrictions.

Overview

  • Vice Minister Leonardo Rojas reported two laboratory-confirmed H3N2 subclade K infections in children in Lima, and both have recovered and been discharged.
  • The Epidemiological Alert No. 008-2025 orders reinforced epidemiological surveillance, expanded laboratory diagnostics and prioritized vaccinations for children under 5, older adults and pregnant women.
  • Health centers nationwide are offering free seasonal influenza shots to vulnerable groups, with regional directorates stepping up testing and outreach, including enhanced controls at border transit points such as Tumbes.
  • Health Minister Luis Quiroz said targeted vaccine supply against the circulating H3N2 subclade is scheduled to arrive between March and April 2026.
  • CDC Perú’s César Munayco noted the subclade’s spread across at least 32 countries and assessed the risk of a local epidemic as low in the current warm season, as authorities urge hand hygiene, ventilation and mask use when symptomatic.
