Peru Confirms Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 Public-Sector Breaks as Argentina Keeps Dec. 26 a Regular Workday Except for Local Asuetos

Peru’s measure is nationwide for state employees, unlike Argentina’s patchwork of provincial and municipal exceptions.

Overview

  • Peru’s Supreme Decree No. 042-2025-PCM designates Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, and Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, as non-working days for public-sector workers to spur domestic tourism.
  • Public employees in Peru must recover the hours within 10 days or on schedules set by each agency, with essential services maintained and private employers able to opt in by agreement.
  • Argentina’s official calendar does not make Friday, Dec. 26, a national holiday, and most workers resume activity that day, while national public administration has asueto only on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 under Decree 883/2025.
  • Several Argentine jurisdictions granted limited breaks: Buenos Aires province, Tucumán and Jujuy declared administrative asuetos for Dec. 26, with Tucumán and Jujuy also covering Jan. 2, and cities such as Leandro N. Alem, Coronel Dorrego and Labardén set local non-working days.
  • Banks and financial institutions continue normal operations in both countries, and essential services remain on duty, with private-sector adoption of any break left to employer–worker arrangements.
