Peru Carries Out Nighttime Mega-Searches in Five Emergency Prisons

Authorities say the raids are meant to dismantle contraband networks and will route seized evidence to police and prosecutors for criminal probes.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Justice, through the National Penitentiary Institute, led simultaneous inspections on the night of Thursday, September 17 in Ancón I, Miguel Castro Castro, El Milagro, Challapalca and Cochamarca.
  • Officials reported more than 500 prison agents, police and prosecutors took part in the operation and handed all seized material to the National Police and the Public Ministry for investigation.
  • Teams recovered phones, routers, chargers, improvised electrical connections, cutting tools and narcotics with site counts including 19 cellphones and seven routers at Miguel Castro Castro.
  • Initial accounts said El Milagro produced no seizures but the Interior Ministry later confirmed a large drug haul there of 298 packages of marijuana and 28 small packets of cocaine and noted armed forces provided perimeter security.
  • The raids signal a stepped-up, interagency effort to cut prison-run extortion and criminal coordination and authorities said more control operations and prosecutions will follow as investigations proceed.
