Peru Blocks 300,000 More Illegal Phones in October as Osiptel Targets Cloned IMEIs

The Renteseg whitelist regime links mass blocking to real-time data access for police and prosecutors to curb phone-enabled crime.

Overview

  • Osiptel sent operator orders in two batches of 150,000 devices on October 14 and October 28, and it is supervising compliance.
  • The blocked phones were flagged for a negative history tied to repeated use of invalid or cloned IMEIs outside the Renteseg whitelist.
  • This latest action lifts the 2025 total to about 1.8 million blocked devices after more than 1.5 million were removed between April and September.
  • The whitelist permits only legally imported phones with valid, registered IMEIs, and noncompliant devices can be disconnected without prior notice, so users are urged to verify IMEIs before purchase.
  • Since June 2024, a specialized consultation module has logged over 590,000 queries by the National Police and Public Ministry to support investigations, while daily phone theft reports have fallen about 38% since 2017.
