Persistent Availability Culture Leaves Spanish Workers Unable to Unplug on Vacation

Weak enforcement of Spain’s digital disconnection law allows constant demands for after-hours responses to erode employees’ holiday rest.

Overview

  • Randstad’s survey of more than 4,300 Spanish workers found only 46.9% of professionals and 44% in the Comunitat Valenciana disconnect mentally at the start of their vacation.
  • A total of 53% of Spanish employees need over a week to mentally unplug—34.2% require at least one week, 14.3% up to two weeks and 4.5% never achieve full detachment.
  • Nearly 38% of respondents report their companies expect them to answer messages outside working hours, a sign of a persistent always-on culture.
  • The ability to turn off varies by sector, with education, healthcare and transport workers struggling most and over half of industrial and technology employees disconnecting right away.
  • Experts from Hays advise employees to wrap up tasks in advance, assign backups, leave work devices behind and take pre- and post-vacation adjustment days to ensure genuine rest.
