Overview
- The Perseid meteor shower runs from July 17 through August 23 and is set to peak overnight on August 12–13 with up to 100 meteors per hour under dark skies.
- The Southern Delta Aquariid shower follows from July 18 to August 12, featuring a broad maximum around July 29–30 and rates of 15–20 meteors per hour.
- Perseids originate from debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle and are famed for swift, bright streaks that often include fireballs exceeding magnitude −3.
- The Delta Aquariids trace back to Comet 96P/Machholz and will best be viewed toward the constellation Aquarius just after midnight.
- Observers are advised to allow their eyes to adapt for about 20 minutes, find remote sites with clear horizons, and look toward Perseus and Aquarius before dawn while planning around moon phases.
