Perplexity’s Comet AI Browser Goes Free Worldwide

Perplexity is coupling the rollout with a revenue-sharing content bundle for publishers.

Overview

  • The agentic browser, previously limited to the $200-per-month Max tier since July, is now available to all users at no cost with usage limits for the free tier.
  • Comet centers a persistent sidecar assistant that summarizes pages, answers questions, manages content, and can navigate sites on a user's behalf.
  • Paid plans retain advanced capabilities, including an Email Assistant and a new Background Assistant that performs multiple tasks asynchronously with model upgrades for Pro and Max subscribers.
  • Comet Plus is offered as a $5 monthly add-on that grants access to participating publishers such as CNN, The Washington Post, Fortune, the Los Angeles Times, Condé Nast, Le Monde, and Le Figaro, with Perplexity stating 80% of revenue is shared with partners.
  • Perplexity announced a Chess.com partnership that gifts Comet users 30 days of Premium and launches the 2025 Comet Open on October 11 with a $200,000 prize pool requiring the Comet browser, as the company challenges Chrome and faces ongoing lawsuits from some publishers it denies infringing.
