Perplexity Brings Portable Computer to Windows on RTX PCs

The release advances local-first AI by letting users run multistep agent workflows on their machines to keep data private and reduce cloud usage.

Overview

  • Perplexity added Portable Computer to its Windows app on Sept. 14, making the local agent available for NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO PCs that meet hardware requirements.
  • The feature requires an NVIDIA GPU with at least 24 GB of VRAM and is offered to Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers, which limits use to high-end desktops and workstations.
  • Portable Computer runs optimized local models such as Qwen 3.8 and PPLX 27B on the GPU to analyze files, plan multistep tasks, and perform recurring work without sending data off-device.
  • The product bundles a browser, tool calling, the SPACE sandbox, and connectors to Outlook, OneDrive, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub and will ask users for permission before escalating tasks to cloud models.
  • The rollout builds on prior Linux and Apple releases and highlights an industry shift to hybrid agent systems while underscoring that high VRAM floors and platform engineering will keep adoption focused on prosumers and enterprises.
