Pepper Spray Discharge Blamed for Odor at Okayama Elementary, Nine Students Hospitalized

Authorities say a teacher testing a security spray outdoors from a corridor produced the irritant odor.

  • A 119 call was made around 9 a.m. reporting a strong smell and eye and throat pain near the staff room at Kojiro Elementary in Niimi City.
  • Nine pupils were transported by ambulance to local hospitals and were described as in mild condition and conscious.
  • A school staff member accompanied the transported students, according to local officials.
  • The city education board says 17 of the school’s 18 enrolled students were present, along with eight staff members.
  • The fire department and education authorities are investigating and view the discharged security spray as the likely source of the odor.
