Peoples Gas Files $202 Million Rate Case Ahead of 11-Month ICC Review

The request seeks to fund an accelerated replacement of more than 1,000 miles of aging iron pipe ordered finished by 2035.

Overview

  • If approved, typical residential delivery charges in Chicago would rise by about $10 to $11 a month starting in 2027, the company said.
  • The Illinois Commerce Commission will evaluate the filing over roughly 11 months in a quasi-judicial process to determine how much, if any, of the request is allowed.
  • Consumer, environmental and community groups protested Tuesday at Peoples Gas headquarters and vowed to challenge the case, citing affordability concerns and the utility’s 2023 $303 million increase.
  • Peoples Gas says the request reflects regulator mandates, inflation and safety needs, and argues the work would reduce leaks and prepare the system for cleaner fuels such as renewable natural gas and hydrogen.
  • A companion request from North Shore Gas seeks $14 million, equal to about $5.21 more per month for suburban customers, and opponents also criticized a proposed shareholder return on equity of 10.1%.
