Overview

  • On July 23, the Pentagon’s Office of Inspector General obtained the original Secret/NOFORN email from Gen. Michael Kurilla that formed the basis for the March Signal messages.
  • The classified document shows that the details Hegseth shared—timing, choreography and assets for U.S. strikes in Yemen—were derived from a Secret/NOFORN email.
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell maintain that no classified information was transmitted via Signal, despite inspector general evidence to the contrary.
  • Investigators are examining whether aides physically entered the classified content into Hegseth’s Signal chats at his direction and assessing compliance with Defense Department communication policies.
  • The active inquiry, launched in April at lawmakers’ request, also reviews records-retention practices and could lead to further findings on operational security lapses.
