Pentagon Reports China Rapidly Expanding Military Capabilities, China Denounces US as "Disruptor of Peace"
Pentagon anticipates China will double its nuclear arsenal to 1,000 warheads by 2030, signaling the largest peacetime military expansion since WWII, with a focus on taking Taiwan by force and deterring adversaries from using nuclear weapons.
- China's military expansion and modernization, underway for over 30 years, is the largest peacetime buildup since WWII. China added 1,000 conventional missiles to strike Taiwanese and American bases.
- China's nuclear capabilities have expanded significantly, with estimates that it could hit 1,000 warheads by 2030, double today's number. This is still far short of the 1,419 strategic warheads that the U.S. has deployed globally.
- In an anti-Taiwan strategy, China's naval forces have grown significantly. The People’s Liberation Army Navy added six destroyers and there are feared to now outnumber Taiwan's navy.
- To deter adversaries, China doubled its inventory of DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missiles to 500. These missiles can reach the U.S. territory of Guam, and poses an increasing defensive challenge.
- The Pentagon report has sparked diplomatic tension with Beijing. China has called the U.S. the “biggest disruptor of regional peace and stability” and criticised the report for exaggerating China’s military threat.
