Overview

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the redeployment of 700 active-duty Marines after Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said their presence helped restore order.
  • Last week’s withdrawal of about half of the roughly 4,000 Title 10-federalized California National Guard members reduced the total force in the city to approximately 2,000.
  • The Marines were initially deployed in June to protect federal property and personnel during protests against ICE workplace raids.
  • Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass condemned the military deployment as unnecessary and have pursued legal challenges over the federalization of state troops.
  • A trial next month will test the administration’s authority under the Posse Comitatus Act, and the mission’s cost is estimated at $134 million.
