Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said reduced unrest following ICE-related protests justified the pullback.

Overview

  • About 2,000 of the roughly 4,000 National Guard soldiers sent in June will leave, reflecting Pentagon assessments of lower lawlessness in the city.
  • Approximately 2,000 Guardsmen and 700 Marines will remain under federal command to guard buildings and support ICE operations.
  • Governor Gavin Newsom has demanded the removal of all remaining federal forces, arguing their presence usurps state authority and hampers wildfire response.
  • Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass welcomed the partial withdrawal, crediting the peaceful organization of protests against ICE deportation raids.
  • The continued deployment follows a 9th U.S. Circuit Court ruling that reinstated presidential control and marks the first federalization of a state guard over a governor’s objection since 1965.
