Pentagon Implements Shutdown Plan, Keeps Border Forces on Duty

Active-duty troops face a pay pause after Oct. 15, with large civilian furloughs moving ahead.

Overview

  • The Pentagon’s contingency plan designates the southern border, Middle East operations, the Golden Dome missile defense program, depot maintenance, shipbuilding and critical munitions as top priorities.
  • About 334,900 civilian Defense Department employees are being furloughed, while roughly 223,900 are classified as excepted and must continue working.
  • Active-duty troops and reservists on active orders will continue to work, with pay funded for the first two weeks and then paused after Oct. 15 absent new appropriations.
  • Roughly 8,500 personnel assigned to Joint Task Force Southern Border remain on duty to support border security operations.
  • As many as 2 million service members could be required to work without pay depending on the shutdown’s duration, and Navy Federal Credit Union is offering 0% APR paycheck assistance to eligible members.
