Pentagon Acknowledges Iran Damaged US Communications Dome at Qatar’s Al Udeid Base

On July 11 Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said a geodesic radome was destroyed with minimal damage to base systems, noting that Al Udeid remains fully operational after the June 23 missile assault

Satellite images by Planet Labs PBC (left) on June 25 show that the dome (right) is gone, with damage to the nearby building.

Overview

  • Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC revealed the geodesic dome was intact on the morning of June 23 but missing with scorch marks by June 25
  • The dome housed a $15 million Modernized Enterprise Terminal installed in 2016 by the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing to secure CENTCOM voice, video and data links
  • American and Qatari Patriot batteries intercepted 13 of 14 missiles in the June 23 barrage, with only one warhead striking the communications structure
  • President Trump said Iran gave advance notice of the strike, allowing personnel to evacuate equipment and avoid any injuries
  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed the base was “completely destroyed,” a stark contrast to U.S. assessments and the swift ceasefire that ended 12 days of regional fighting
